Community Governor: Chair of Governors, Pay Panel, Lead governor for Personnel and staff welfare, Lead Governor for School Improvement & Early Years , Standards, and Curriculum Link Governor for Science
I have been the Chair of Governors since September 2017 and as well as planning and chairing meetings my main responsibilities are School Improvement and Curriculum. I was deputy head at Maynard School for 20 years, where I taught Biology and was responsible for pastoral care, curriculum and the induction of newly qualified teachers. I also did inspections for the Independent School’s inspectorate and so had the privilege of seeing a lot of different schools, which taught me a lot. After retiring I decided I had ‘done’ education but found I just couldn’t stay away and I am now really enjoying being involved with children and school staff again.
I have lived in Ide for about 40 years and have one daughter and two grandchildren who live locally. As my grandson is nearly three, I have been particularly interested in monitoring the way that the preschool is being integrated into main school and finding out about curriculum, assessment and how learning is organised for our youngest pupils.
Community Governor: Resource Committee, Lead Governor for Finance, Pay Panel, Curriculum Link Governor for PSHE
I am lead governor for finance so I help the governors ensure we keep a careful watch on the spending of the budget the school receives, making sure this matches the priorities that emerge from the school’s improvement plan, and that we make responsible bids to the Academy Trust for new expenditure.
I am a retired but still very active minister of the Methodist Church, having been involved in its governance at local and national levels, and working for a time as part of its senior headquarters management team. My wife and I retired to Ide in 2016 because we love walking and otherwise enjoying this beautiful part of the country, and are delighted that we found a home in a village of character and community, with all that Exeter has to offer a short walk away. Three of our grandchildren are at primary school. I dabble in photography, enjoy cycle rides, and belong to a local vegetable-growing co-operative.
Community Governor: Chair of Pupils, Teaching & Learning Committee, Lead Governor for SEND and Safeguarding, Curriculum Link Governor for Art, Music and Drama
My current main responsibilities are Safeguarding and Special Educational Needs. I have a background in teaching, having trained and worked as an art teacher and later taken a further degree in Special Educational Needs. After bringing up my children I returned to full time teaching and until my retirement taught art and basic skills to blind and visually impaired children.
I live in the village and my first involvement with Ide Primary School was when I took a temporary part time post supporting a visually impaired child. Since leaving this post I have volunteered at the school on a regular basis. Some years ago when the opportunity arose, I applied to become a governor; a position that has provided me with a great amount of interest and satisfaction.
